Migrant Advocate

Custom Job Purpose

This position exists to assist schools in meeting the unique academic needs of eligible migrant students.

Essential Functions of this Job

Professional duties will include identifying migrant students who are at-risk in not meeting grade level proficiency by analyzing data from identified state and district formative and summative assessments, classroom assignments, and other identified curricula-based learning tasks; collaborating with teachers to plan, implement, and evaluate interventions for identified students; identifying appropriate supplemental resources to meet students' individual needs; monitoring students' response and communicating with administration, teachers, and parents regarding students' progress in tutoring activities.

Works with school guidance counselors to determine and monitor migrant students' unique academic needs. Assists pre-K students in their preparation for kindergarten. Assists K-12 students to increase their math and reading scores. Works with the Migrant Manager to assist out of school youth to enroll in education programs that focus on life skills, English skills, and GED preparation. Assists secondary students in graduating from high school and exploring college and career opportunities. Encourages a positive self-image for migrant students. Establishes communication with the parents of migrant students in order to address personal, social and academic needs. Plans and facilitatesparent involvement activities and meetings. Maintains records and prepares monthly reports documenting parent, staff, and student contacts

Qualifications

Florida teacher certification in Elementary education or secondary core content area with at least three years of successful teaching experience. Must have a valid driver's license appropriate to the vehicle assigned and be qualified to drive a School Board vehicle.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Basic knowledge of curriculum. Ability to work with children of varying ages and abilities. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and administrative staff. Ability to organize and facilitate meetings. Ability to maintain records and work with school personnel. Ability to work with parents, business and other community members. Bilingual/biliterate required.

Work Context

Requires some sitting and standing, walking and moving about to coordinate work. Requires the use of alternative communication systems, such as electronic mail, telephones and computers. Requires coordination of work tasks to establish priorities, set goals and meet deadlines. Requires face-to-face discussions and contact with students, individuals and/or teams. Requires work with students, internal and external contacts, and with the public.

Physical Environment

Requires working indoors in environmentally controlled conditions. Requires sitting for the majority of the day, and the ability to lift, carry, move and/or position objects infrequently weighing up to 20 pounds. Requires travel to schools and worksites within the district.
