Position Title

Painter

Custom Job Purpose

This position exists to perform skilled work in the painting of interior and exterior buildings, fixtures and various equipment and miscellaneous items.

Essential Functions of this Job

Applies coats of paint, varnish, stains, enamel or lacquer to decorate and protect interior or exterior surfaces, trimmings and fixtures of buildings and other surfaces. Erects scaffolding or sets up ladders to perform tasks above ground level. Utilizes various tools and equipment in the performance of duties. Keeps daily records and logs of work performed. Paints surfaces using brushes, rollers, mitts, airless spray equipment or conventional spray equipment. Smoothes surfaces, using sandpaper, brushes or steel wool, and removes old paint from surfaces, using paint remover, scraper or a wire brush. Fills nail holes, cracks and joints with putty, plaster, spackling compound or other fillers. Drives throughout Polk County to and from job sites. Must be able to perform physical tasks as set forth in the Physical Environment section of this document.

Qualifications

Graduation from high school, completion of GED, or trade school. Must have a valid driver's license appropriate to the vehicles assigned to the trade and be qualified to drive a School Board vehicle.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Three (3) years full-time practical experience under the supervision of a licensed paint contractor is preferred. Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and practices of the painting craft. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Skill in the use and care of paint brushes, paint sprayers and other equipment of the painting craft. Skill in mixing paint and matching colors. Ability to keep daily records and logs. Bilingual/biliterate preferred.

Work Context

Requires coordination of work tasks to establish priorities, set goals and meet deadlines. Requires work with both internal and external contacts, and with the public. Requires the use of alternative communication systems such as electronic mail, telephones and computers.

Physical Environment

Requires standing for the majority of the day, and the ability to frequently lift, carry, move and/or position objects weighing up to 50 pounds. May infrequently be required to lift more than 50 pounds with assistance as needed. Requires working both indoors and outdoors. Requires the proper use of personal protective devices and equipment as assigned.
