Custom Job Purpose

This position exists to assemble, install and repair pipes, fitting and fixtures of heating, water and drainage systems according to specifications and plumbing codes.

Essential Functions of this Job

Considerable knowledge of plumbing practices in laying out and installing water and other pipe systems and fixtures, materials and tools and their suitability for different types of work and of their application. Considerable knowledge of regulations regarding sanitary plumbing system installations. Knowledge of hydraulics as it relates to flow rates, pipe sizes and pressures. Ability to install and repair water heaters, water coolers, pumps and other units. Ability to operate power pipe cutting and threading machines. Ability to work from blueprints and other designs and diagram. Skill in the use of tools of the plumbing trade. Ability to keep daily records and logs.Assemble pipe sections, tubing and fittings, using couplings, clamps, screws, bolts, cement, plastic solvent, caulking, or soldering, brazing and welding equipment. Fill pipes or plumbing fixtures with water or air and observe pressure gauges to detect and locate leaks. Review blueprints and building codes and specifications to determine work details and procedures. Prepare written work cost estimates and negotiate contracts. Study building plans and inspect structures to assess material and equipment needs, to establish the sequence of pipe installations, and to plan installation around obstructions such as electrical wiring. Keep records of assignments and produce detailed work reports. Perform complex calculations and planning for special or very large jobs. Locate and mark the position of pipe installations, connections, passage holes, and fixtures in structures, using measuring instruments such as rulers and levels. Measure, cut, thread, and bend pipe to required angle, using hand and power tools or machines such as pipe cutters, pipe-threading machines, and pipe-bending machines. Install pipe assemblies, fittings, valves, appliances such as dishwashers and water heaters, and fixtures such as sinks and toilets, using hand and power tools. Must be able to perform physical tasks as set forth in the Physical Environment section of this document.

Qualifications

Graduation from high school, completion of GED, or trade school. Must have a valid driver's license appropriate to the vehicles assigned to the trade and be qualified to drive a School Board Vehicle. Must have or obtain an active journeyman license within the first year to continue employment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Minimum three (3) years full-time practical experience in commercial and/or industrial plumbing repair work under a licensed plumbing contractor is preferred. Considerable knowledge of the standard practices, methods, tools and materials of the plumbing trade. Knowledge of local and national plumbing codes. Knowledge of the hazards of the trade, and of appropriate precautionary measures. Practical experience in the installation, repair and maintenance of a wide variety of plumbing and other pipe systems under supervision of a licensed plumbing contractor. Bilingual/biliterate preferred.

Requires coordination of work tasks to establish priorities, set goals and meet deadlines.

Physical Environment

Requires standing for the majority of the day, and the ability to frequently lift, carry, move and/or position objects weighing up to 50 pounds. May infrequently require lifting more than 50 pounds with assistance as needed. Requires working both indoors and outdoors. Requires exposure to outdoor elements, including weather changes, foliage, insects. Requires the handling and use of cleaning solvents and solutions. Requires the proper use of personal protective devices and equipment as assigned.
