Custom Job Purpose

This position exists to translate, under the supervision of the Director of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), and/or interpret forms, letters, and other documents that are used in the district into Haitian Creole/French. Translations must be free of errors in grammar, spelling, and content. The level of difficulty in the translations range from General, Semi-technical, and Technical. Translations are expected to be verbatim replicas of the original in terms of register and format unless otherwise specified by supervisor. An understanding of educational terms is helpful.  The intent is to improve the transition of Haitian Creole students into PCPS and to support school and district-based personnel with services provided to families and students requiring communication in Haitian Creole/French.

Qualifications

High school diploma is required. Graduation from an accredited college or university with a minimum of an associate's degree is preferred. Experience as a professional translator is preferred. Must be able to demonstrate fluency in English and Haitian Creole/French.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Must be fully fluent in Haitian Creole/French and English with the ability to read, listen, understand, and translate spoken or written statements from English to Haitian Creole/French and Haitian Creole/French to English. Reproduce statements in Haitian Creole for unique listening or reading audience. Ability to operate standard office equipment and software applications. Bilingual/biliterate required.

Work Context

Requires some sitting and standing, walking and moving about to coordinate work. Requires the use of alternative communication systems, such as electronic mail, telephones and computers. Requires coordination of work tasks to establish priorities, set goals and meet deadlines. Requires face-to-face discussions and contact with individuals and/or teams. Requires work with students, internal and external contacts, and with the public.

Physical Environment

Requires working indoors in environmentally controlled conditions. Requires sitting, standing, moving about, ability to lift, carry, move and/or position objects infrequently weighing up to 20 pounds.
