Custom Job Purpose

This position exists to assist with a specific Exceptional Student Education (ESE) student's instructional/developmental program. Provides assistance with clerical duties, student supervision, behavior management, and related educational support throughout the school day. Duties are performed under the general supervision of supervisors/teachers. Performance is evaluated through observation of work, and/or periodic conferences, critiques, records and reports.

Essential Functions of this Job

Professional duties will involve attending meetings as necessary, attending appropriate inservice provided, and becoming acquainted with philosophies, policies, procedures, equipment, and the work site where assigned. Assists assigned teacher(s) by maintaining student records, preparing and distributing teaching materials, and grading student assignments. Supervision of student during meal time, during special programs/classes, staffings, fieldtrips, loading and unloading of buses, playground duty. May require changing, diapering, and/or feeding of student, with appropriate training. May require performance of non-invasive medical procedures with appropriate training. Reinforcement of instruction to individuals and small groups in various situations and programs, and tutoring, under teacher direction/supervision. Ensures classroom environment and other areas of instruction are designed for the oveall safety, care, and enrichment of the children enrolled. May require behavioral monitoring and/or assisting with Crisis Prevention Intervention team. Classroom assistance will be required in preparing projects, supervising students, field trips, reinforcement of discipline, and assistance with daily living skills. Technology will be used to enhance instruction and aid in tasks assigned.

Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited high school or completion of GED and sixty (60) or more credit hours or an Associate's degree or higher from an accredited school or a passing score on the Para Pro exam.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Sincerely interested in educating and working with exceptional children. Ability to understand written and oral instructions, to speak and write coherently, to keep records and make simple reports, and to work cooperatively and act professionally with other school personnel and parents. Bilingual/biliterate preferred.

Work Context

Requires sitting and some standing, walking and moving about to coordinate work. May require pushing/pulling, lifting, kneeling, crouching, reaching, and running. May require lifting, moving positioning and assisting students who are needy and have physical limitations. Requires face-to-face discussions and contact with individuals and/or teams. Requires the use of alternative communication systems, such as electronic mail, telephones and computers and may require assistance with student assistive technology devices with appropriate training. Requires coordination of work tasks to establish priorities, set goals and meet deadlines. Requires work with students, parents, internal and external contacts, and with the public.

Physical Environment

Requires working indoors in environmentally controlled conditions as well as outdoors. Requires sitting and standing for the majority of the day, and the ability to lift, carry, move and/or position objects frequently weighing up to 40 pounds, and infrequently weighing 100 pounds or more, with help as necessary.
